This morning on Macon Meadows I noticed a behaviour I don’t recall seeing before: at first, I thought I could hear a Nuthatch tapping/knocking on a branch but it was coming from the undergrowth close to me at waist height. After moving to get a better view from where it was sounds were coming from, I watched for about a minute a Blue Tit breaking into the stem of a dead vegetation. At one point it tore off a piece of the broken stem.
A Sparrowhawk flew in low from over the allotments and along the gardens bordering the fields. Not long after it flew back in the opposite direction ‘empty-handed’.
A Fox between Macon Way & the rail tracks and as I neared the end of my walk I heard the tapping again: a Blue Tit doing the same action in the vegetation on the river bank at the other end of my walk

A good selection of ducks at Rode Pool this morning with 2 shelduck being the best plus goosander, shoveler, tufted, mallard, wigeon, teal and at least 8 mandarin. Also egyptian goose, little egret and kingfisher of note.

SWaBBS this morning in a private wood near Barthomley: Green Sandpiper and Great W Egret in the stream on farmland nearby. Not a lot of movement overhead – probably due to the low cloud.
Very, very quiet on Meremoor Moss on Thursday morning: perhaps the wrong expression, as I heard 4/5 loud bangs while there which sounded like an automatic bird scarer! Just a hunting Kestrel of note.

I made it to Doddington this afternoon; missed the goldeneye but did get a total of 52 tufted and the 6 pochard and a total little grebe count of 19. 7 meadow pipits on wires and 8 pied wagtails feeding on the ground below. As I was leaving around 15-00 a lesser black-backed gull count gave a total of 264 – possibly early arrivals for the evening gull roost that will be forming now.

A late morning amble round the inner path on Wybunbury Moss earlier: an almost constant stream of Starlings and Redwing overhead from east to west – flocks c50. Occasionally, small groups of Fieldfare – c5-10 as well.
I noted an unfamiliar song while on the boardwalk checking the horse paddocks. I think it was coming from the hedge that separates the fields from the moss? It was only a short burst, similar to a Robin but a lower pitch and ‘plaintive’. I didn’t hear it again on the way back! I don’t think it was a Robin as there was one in full song perched on the wires above my head. Any thoughts?
On the moss I noted: Water Rail, Snipe – high overhead, Jay, Coal Tit, lots of Long-tailed Tit working through the vegetation, a small group of Redwing on the berries, Mistle Thrush and Bullfinch. On the Alders, I only noted Blue & Great Tit, Chaffinch & Goldfinch but heard Linnet overhead.

What a lovely day to start my first SWaBBS visit of this period – Meremoor Moss. Not as pleasant on the return leg with the cold wind on my face! And the sun behind me.
Also, it was good to see the fields holding pools of water, it’s been a while since I’ve seen that much here.
I hadn’t got far when I heard an unfamiliar ‘call’ overhead. On looking up I saw a Cormorant; it was being harassed by a Peregrine. Shortly after, the Peregrine was being harassed by a Carrion Crow.
It was also nice to connect with: – Kingfisher, Kestrel, Skylark, Redwing, Meadow Pipit, Bullfinch, Linnet, Siskin & Reed Bunting.
I called in at the neighbouring Mere Moor Fisheries afterwards. The bailiff was putting feed down for the ‘menagerie’ while I was there so all the waterfowl was showing including the Muscovy Duck. I heard a Snipe high overhead and later disturbed another from some damp ground at the far end of the pools.
