Barn Owl along David Whitby Way, Crewe at 11.40 this evening and then another on the fence at Doddington at 11.50pm

Great Northern Diver on West Kirby Marine Lake today. Causing quite a lot of interest and some very impressive camera gear evident.

At Doddington this morning the only additional counts were tufted 66 and mute swan 55; 1 little egret resting in the willows by the inlet and the usual local flock of around 200 lapwing resting on the bank. Then a large flock of around 350 lapwing flew in from the east and so 550 lapwing flying around in the sunshine was a good sight to see.

The only birds seen during a walk over Meremoor Moss this afternoon were two Crows stood in the middle of what is now 50 acres of uniform grassland, but there were around 300 sheep grazing in the area. The only other bird in the area was a Stonechat working its way along a weed lined drain.

A somewhat gusty morning at Doddington this morning yielded,Goldeneye and Teal in low double figures,34 Shovelers,3 Pochard,3 Barnacle Geese,Mandarin and the last bird of the morning,a Peregrine swooped down low but didn’t connect with anything.Earlier,on the feeders,G.S.Woodpecker,Nuthatch and Coal Tits.

3 male Goldeneye have joined the females at Doddington but little change with 8 Teal, 4 Pochard,male Mandarin, Snipe and Little Grebes there this morning.

2 little egrets still at Doddington this morning and a few more duck species but after ignoring the 500+ mallard not many actual ducks. tufted 20; goldeneye 6; wigeon 6; teal 3; shoveler 2; pochard 1; plus 55 mute swans; 170 canada geese and 110 greylag geese.

I did a ‘reccie’ yesterday morning of my BBS 1km square at King George V Playing Fields and Queen’s Park for the BTO/English Nature English Winter Bird Survey that starts next month.
Birds of note: – Barnacle Goose 1, Goosander 9m + 11f & Common Gull c10.

Good numbers and variety of birds off Checkley Lane this morning,with,3 Yellowhammers,50 Skylark,Linnets,Meadow Pipits,Raven,85 Fieldfares,Redwings,Mistle Thrush and scores of newly released Red legged Partridge.A brief view at Doddington gave,Mandarin,9 Shovelers and 2 Teal of note.

Just 4 Shovelers and a single Teal of any note at Doddington compared with Monday when we logged,Jack Snipe,5 Com Snipe,Jays,Mistle Thrush,2 big flocks of around 300 Lapwings,and low counts of Goldeneyes,Pochard,Wigeon,single Gadwall and a comedy duo of 2 Muscovy Ducks! Also this morning at Lea Forge again low numbers with 2 pairs of Bullfinch,3 Goldcrests and 4 bathing Meadow Pipits the highlight .

1 jack snipe, 200 lapwing and 84 cormorants were the only noteworthy birds at Doddington this morning. Where are all the winter ducks?

Jack Snipe still on Doddington Pool island from south shoreline as of yesterday afternoon. Was mostly asleep from 3.30pm till 4.15pm started preening itself after that and then had a walk about feeding after sundown.

Jack Snipe and Common Snipe both showing again at Doddington this morning and Goldeneyes up to 7 females.Also noted were 2 Pochard,7 Shovelers,4 Little Grebes,10 Meadow Pipits,Common Gull,Kestrel and a decent flock of 220 Lapwings.
